Osteoprosis... WHAT IS IT?

Bone-density tests may be recommended for some women after they have experienced menopause. The tests are also used to monitor osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Bone measurement is a quick, painless and inexpensive test. The most accurate of these tests is done with a bone densitometer using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (iDEXA). The iDEXA scan is very accurate and can measure as little as 1 percent to 2 percent loss of bone. The iDEXA scan is used not only to diagnose bone loss, but also t documents the bone density over time and with treatment.

Special CT scans also can measure bone density, and ultrasound machines may be helpful in the near future. Routine X-rays of the bones help identify fractures. However, x-rays are not accurate in determining bone density because 30 percent or more of the bone must be lost before the x-ray shows it clearly. Other densityometry methods are useful, but less accurate.

Your doctor also may conduct laboratory tests to help rule out secondary contributing factors to osteoporosis.

These laboratory tests include:

  • serum calcium test;
  • Phosphorus test'
  • Protein test
  • Thyroid hormone test;
  • Alkaline phosphatast test;
  • Liver and kidney function tests
Certain doctors have special training and experience that help them diagnose and treat people with osteoporosis. Rheumatologists specialize in treating people with arthritis and related musculokeletal disorders. Endocrinologists specialize in treating diseases of the body's endocrine system (glands and hormones) that can include osteoporosis. Orthopaedic surgeons treat fractures related to osteoporosis.

OSTEOPOROSIS TREATMENT
Many of the steps you can take prevent osteoporosis-such as
increasing calcium intake, exercise regularly, taking estrogen and maintaining a healthy lifestyle - also can help treat it. You should learn about the risks and benefits of potential treatments, and consider your age, health factors and personal preferences when comparing treatment options.

Discuss the options with your doctor.

  • Hormone
  • replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs)
  • Bisphosphonates
  • Forteo
