SYMMETRIC
(Polyarthritis)
Closely resembles rheumatoid arthritis. It tends to affect
multiple joints symmetrically (on both sides of the body) at the same time. They
commonly affect the small joints of the hands, feet, wrists, ankles, knees, and
elbows.
ASYMMETRIC
(Oligoarthritis)
Most notable symptom is swelling of one large joint (such
as the Knee) as well as one or two smaller joints on different sides of the body,
possibly the fingers or toes.
MUTILANS
A rare but severe form characterized by destruction of the bones in the fingers
and less commonly the toes. Physical signs are shortened and deformed digita and
fusion of the joints.
DISTAL
INTERPHALANGEAL (DIP) PREDOMINANT
Notable symptoms and signs are pain
and swelling of the distal interphalangeal joints (closest to the fingernails
and toenails). Characteristically associated with destructive changes in the involved
nails.
SPONDYLITIS
Spine
and sacroiliac joints are affected, (the area where the spine meets the pelvis)
It is slowly progressive and may be associated with inflammatory pain and stiffness
in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
